Why Cascades? — The Story Behind Cascades
Together, we can shape how children are supported—and help every child reach their fullest potential.
The name Cascades is inspired by developmental cascades theory—the idea that challenges in one area of a child’s life can create effects across many others over time.
Entering school requires children to adapt to an entirely new academic and social environment. When a child begins to struggle in either of these areas, the effects can extend beyond an individual grade, behavior, or interaction.
Early difficulties can influence a child’s self-perception, relationships with peers and teachers, academic performance, and connection to school.
Repeated setbacks and negative feedback can cause these patterns to intensify with each new developmental transition or challenge. Without effective intervention, children experiencing these cascades face increased risks of school disengagement, dropping out, unhealthy peer relationships, substance abuse, delinquency, and arrest.
Recognizing elevated risk early—and providing effective, coordinated interventions and support—is critical to changing that trajectory. This understanding inspired Cascades: a whole-child development platform designed to help schools recognize connected patterns, respond earlier, and enable children to live to their fullest potential.
